In December 2019 my dad passed away and I was heartbroken. I hadn’t realized before that I was a “Daddy’s Girl” and I felt the loss deeply. Within a couple weeks everything seemed to go awry. We ran out of gas on I5 (the new/old truck had a broken gas gauge), my computer was hacked, my phone went on the fritz (I had a number of calls to make), and one morning I walked in the kitchen, opened a cupboard door and a mouse dropped out onto the floor! My husband stomped on it and another dropped out! I found myself on the floor laughing and crying while my husband cleaned up the mess. (It took a month before we got them eradicated.)
I asked, “Lord what is happening? How can I celebrate Christmas with all this misery?” God reminded me that the birth of Christ is far more than jingle bells and paper snowflakes. Jesus came into the world to suffer and die so that I can have peace and joy in all circumstances. In my pain I had a choice. Either I could become angry or withdraw into depression or I could thank God for Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Looking down I saw my grief. Looking upward I saw Jesus’ great love for me. –Joan
