I talk to God like my dad. I tell him what I am worried about, what excites me, what I am thankful for.
I remember when I was tired of being alone and feeling like my life was in a rut. I told God all I wanted was a date for Christmas. (Most of my friends were married.) I talked to God about this many times and then September of 1995, my future husband introduced himself to me. By Christmas eve we were engaged and married the following September.
During our courtship, I lived in Portland and he lived with his son at the Oregon Coast, over one hour away. I felt that since his son was a teen it would be better for us if I moved to the coast. Jobs were non-existent. Before I dropped three resumes in the mail, I told God I was concerned about work and asked Him to provide a job so I would be able to have employment after we were married. The very next day I received a phone call from one of the employers asking when I could come in for an interview! I worked for them for 6 years.
My husband and I really wanted to have a family of our own. His son had graduated from high school and moved out with his buddies. We went to doctors, tried fertility drugs for a year, but nothing helped. We didn’t have the funds to pay for further treatment. We had friends praying. We prayed together and our parents were praying. Then God answered, 4 years later we brought home a baby boy!
We moved into Portland for work. At church one Sunday the Pastor asked if there was anyone needing special prayer, inviting them to come up to the front of the hall. We both ended up going forward for different reasons. Of course, God doesn’t hear us any better at church than he does at home, but that helped us to remember that special day. When we sat back down we quickly asked each other what our prayer request was. I told my husband I wanted another baby and my husband said he wanted to become an electrician. Both desires required divine intervention, especially considering the challenges with our first child. Four years later, we had our daughter in July 2004, the same month my husband started his electrical apprenticeship!
