Our son was talking about a trip home from university. This led me to ask what he wanted to do or see while here. The answer? “Just be home.”
Why is it we have such a need to belong? Because we can be ourselves. People know us and accept us. At work or school we are constantly being evaluated. This is not just from a boss or professor. Our colleagues or classmates are also making judgments about us, our actions, our appearance.
Home is a place of safety. Some people seem to feel secure in any crowd. Most of us don’t, at least not in our inner thoughts. What is the secret to being secure in any situation? Having something to look forward to. What are you looking forward to?
What did Jesus say about home? The night before his death Jesus made these statements to his friends: “Let not your hearts be troubled.” and “I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:1-3). There were many ways Jesus could have described his “departure”, but this strikes me as odd. His next 24 hours would be the most difficult any of us could imagine. But the important thing for his friends to know was that He was going to prepare a place for them. That is home! Not where you’ve been, but where you are going. That is what allows us to push through the stress of today, of tomorrow. Will you make it home? How do you get there?
